The McIntosh laboratory is studying the processes and regulation of iron assimilationin bacteria. Microbes secrete iron chelating molecules (siderophores) to solubilize iron for metabolic needs. The biosynthesis and transport of siderophores are regulated at the molecular level by intracellular iron concentrations.
